Prepare the backlog and run a useful board

Use Backlog to decide what comes next and Boards to see work by status. The two views refer to the same issues, while sprint membership and workflow status answer different questions. This guide follows a small batch from initial ordering to daily progress review.

In the appCanvas menu → Project backlog / Project boards

What you’ll learn

  • Order work before committing it.
  • Keep sprint membership distinct from status.
  • Verify every drag in the destination view.

In this guide
  1. Capture and refine the next work
  2. Order issues deliberately
  3. Place ready work in an open sprint
  4. Choose the board for execution
  5. Update progress through column moves
  6. Review both planning and progress

01

Capture and refine the next work

Open Project backlog from the canvas menu or Backlog from an Agile project page. In the Backlog section, use the issue creation control, enter a title and choose Create. Open the new row to add its description and owner. Keep uncertain work here until the outcome and next action are concrete enough to discuss.

02

Order issues deliberately

Review the next few issues together, opening Details where context is missing. Drag rows within Backlog to place the next priority in the position you intend. Clear search and type filters before a full prioritisation pass so hidden rows do not mislead the review. Reopen the view and check the visible order before discussing commitment.

03

Place ready work in an open sprint

Create a sprint if needed, then drag an issue from Backlog into its section at the desired position. Alternatively, open Details and change Sprint. This changes planning membership; it does not mean the work has started or finished. Confirm the row leaves Backlog, appears once in the target sprint and shows the matching Sprint value.

04

Choose the board for execution

Open Boards and use Select board to choose the intended board, or New board to create one with a descriptive name. Inspect the columns before moving cards. Board options includes Rename board, Copy link and Manage workflow. A copied link selects the board in its project context; open it and check that the header shows the expected board name.

05

Update progress through column moves

Drag a card within a column to adjust its local order, or into another column to request a status change. Moves across columns respect the project transition graph. If the move is rejected, read the feedback and inspect the workflow rather than repeatedly dragging. Open the issue afterward to verify its Status and that the destination contains the expected card.

06

Review both planning and progress

At the end of a review, compare the board’s status with the issue’s sprint placement in Backlog. Return work to Backlog when its commitment changes, and update Status only when its progress changes. Clear temporary filters. Task records are kept in this browser; reopen the selected board to check the result. Resolve saving warnings before reloading the page.

What you will have

An ordered backlog and an execution board whose issue positions, sprint membership and statuses have been checked together.
