Describe, assign and maintain a work item
Use the full issue editor to make an action understandable before it enters a sprint. Start with a title and expected result, then add ownership, planning fields and a useful activity trail. Every project view opens the same issue record.
Boards → issue card → DetailsWhat you’ll learn
- Save precise titles and descriptions.
- Use ownership and planning fields deliberately.
- Keep comments and work logs meaningful.

01
Identify and open the issue
Find the issue in Boards, Backlog or Roadmap and check its project key before opening it. On a canvas card, choose Details. The full dialog shows the issue key at the top and keeps your work attached to that record. Close and reopen it if you selected a similarly named issue by mistake.
02
Write a title and a testable result
Click the title to edit it, describe the action with a verb and press Enter. Open Description and explain the problem, relevant context and completion condition. Save with ⌘/Ctrl + Enter. Reopen each field to check the saved text; a clear outcome lets the next person understand the issue without reconstructing a conversation.
03
Set ownership and urgency
Set Assignee to the person responsible for the next action and use Reporter to preserve who raised the work. Choose Priority from the available levels: Low, Medium, High or Highest. Select Type according to the work’s meaning, not its urgency. After each choice, inspect the displayed value and any validation message before continuing.
04
Connect hierarchy and planning fields
Use Parent issue for a valid direct parent and Epic for the broader outcome. The parent selector excludes incompatible types and cycles. Choose Sprint to place the issue in Backlog or an open sprint; completed sprint membership is protected. Add Original Estimate and Components when they help planning, then verify the parent and sprint in their respective views.
05
Record context and time spent
In Activities, use Comments for a decision or handover. For time, open Time Tracking and enter Time spent or Time remaining using a duration such as 2h 30m. Time spent must be positive and requires a Worklog description. Choose Save, then inspect Worklog to confirm the entry and the updated time summary.
06
Review changes and handle deletion deliberately
Close and reopen Details in this browser to check its locally saved values and any saving warnings. If the issue is unnecessary, use Delete issue and read the confirmation: comments and work logs are removed with it, while child issues remain and are detached. Choose Cancel when you only want to change its status or planning position.
A work item that explains its purpose, ownership, hierarchy and activity, with its saved state checked in the project.
