Build a roadmap with dates, layers and milestones

Roadmap combines a work hierarchy with a timeline. Begin with outcomes and children, give scheduled rows real date ranges, then add layers and milestone markers for a readable delivery discussion. Unscheduled work stays visible until you intentionally draw its schedule.

In the appCanvas menu → Project roadmap → New roadmap / Select roadmap

What you’ll learn

  • Plan the hierarchy before scheduling.
  • Draw, move and resize date ranges.
  • Use layers and milestones to focus discussion.

In this guide
  1. Choose a named roadmap
  2. Build and inspect the work hierarchy
  3. Give an unscheduled row a real range
  4. Set the time scale and useful columns
  5. Organise the plan with layers
  6. Add a milestone and verify the plan

01

Choose a named roadmap

Open Project roadmap from the canvas menu. Use Select roadmap to inspect an existing plan, or choose New roadmap, enter Roadmap name and select Create. The selected roadmap has its own presentation and dependency connections. Confirm the title before editing, especially when the project contains several plans for different horizons or delivery conversations.

02

Build and inspect the work hierarchy

Add an Epic for a meaningful outcome, then use its Add menu or Add child issue control for supported children. Expand rows to inspect Stories, Tasks, Bugs and Sub-tasks at their valid levels. Open an issue by its title to refine details. Keep the tree readable by collapsing branches you are not discussing, without deleting their work.

03

Give an unscheduled row a real range

Choose Day or Week for precise placement and find a row showing Drag to schedule. Drag across the timeline to preview its start and finish, then release to commit the range. Move a scheduled bar to shift the period, or resize its edges to adjust duration. Check the displayed dates after release instead of relying only on the bar’s position.

04

Set the time scale and useful columns

Switch between Day, Week, Month, Quarter and Half Year according to the conversation. Use Today to return to the current date after scrolling. Open Column Settings to show relevant fields such as Status, Due Date, Assignee and Progress while keeping the name column visible. Enter fullscreen when the timeline needs more room, then confirm the same dates at the new scale.

05

Organise the plan with layers

Open Manage Layers and use Add Layer to define a name and color, such as Design or API. Assign relevant epic rows to the appropriate layer, then use the layer selector to focus the view. Check the remaining hierarchy rather than expecting a flat list: related parents and children may stay visible to preserve context during filtering.

06

Add a milestone and verify the plan

Open Manage Milestones, select Add Milestone and enter Title, Due date and color; Layer is optional. Choose Create and inspect the marker at the intended date. Reopen the selected roadmap to verify dates, hierarchy and milestone placement in this browser. Use milestones for meaningful checkpoints, then return to Boards or Backlog for the work’s daily status and sprint decisions.

Manage Milestones: title, due date, colour and optional layer.

What you will have

A readable roadmap with a valid hierarchy, deliberate date ranges, focused layers and visible delivery checkpoints.
